Signs That You Need Roof Repair

The roof is often the most neglected part of a house. If it's covering your home without leaks, you'll rarely think of fixing it. That's always been the norm, and you'll find homeowners going for years or even a decade without a roof inspection. If you're unsure when to conduct repairs, try to inspect your roof for these signs.

Presence of Animal Inhabitants on Your Roof

Unless it's your dogs, cats, birds, or any other pet in your home, other animals are trespassing. If you or your family didn't let these animals in through the doors or windows, how did they get in? Animals such as squirrels and possums likely gained access through the roof.

Schedule an inspection to check for any entry points in your roof that need to be sealed. Carefully relocate the animals and hire a roofing company to conduct roofing repairs.

Exterior Damage

Roofs can last up to 150 years, depending on the roofing material. However, your roof will exhibit signs of damage after several years, depending on the maintenance and weather. Check for signs of peeled paint or loose shingles on your roof.

Also, check your gutters for shingle granules. Typically, shingles shed granules as they wear out. If you notice something that looks like black sand in your gutters, it's time to schedule your roofing repair.

Interior Damage

Any signs of wall discoloration, leaking roof, and stained floors and walls point to a damaged roof that needs roofing repair. Before you schedule your repairs, inspect the roof or hire a professional inspector to diagnose the problem.

Light and Higher Energy Bills

If you have no windows in your attic, there should be no outside light. This warrants an easy fix, which you can accomplish by doing it yourself or hiring a professional.

If your roof has holes, it will struggle to retain hot air in your home. The holes will leak hot air and allow moisture into your home. You'll notice a spike in energy bills.

Missing Shingles

After a storm, tsunami, and any other inclement weather, inspect your roof for damage. Such weather is likely to cause damage, which you can patch up before it worsens. If the roof is severely damaged, the typical roof repair will not work; thus, you'll opt for roof replacement. This will prevent the roof from caving in and damaging property or injuring the occupants.

Fire Damage

You can schedule roofing repair after fire damage but only after you have ascertained the level of damage. A thorough inspection would determine whether you need a new roof or simple repairs.

About Me

Roofers and the Modern Era

Roofs have been along for just about as long as buildings have been around — thousands of years. However, roofs have changed a lot over time. So have the jobs of roofers. Thousands of years ago, roofers knew how to create bundles of straw and use them to make a roof. This process was known a thatching. These days, however, roofers know how to install shingles, put metal sheets on the roof, and lay tile. These are different skills, and they are all very important skills. Join us in discussing these skills, and the work of roofers in general, on this website.
